This foundational week establishes the "closed circuit" by connecting the body's energy meridians using the Magpie Bridge (tongue position). The core practice is the Stough Exhale, which involves counting aloud to progressively empty the lungs until the body takes a powerful, reflexive inhale. The goal is to unlock the diaphragm from neck and jaw tension, leading to immediate anxiety reduction and improved sleep.
The focus shifts to grounding the respiratory system by introducing Mula Bandha (Root Lock). By engaging the pelvic floor at the very end of the exhale, participants learn to "seal the cylinder" and assist the diaphragm, viewing it as a piston. This technique effectively "wrings out" stale air from the lungs, promoting core stability, increasing vitality, and boosting oxygen efficiency.
This week teaches Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock) to dramatically increase inner volume and ribcage flexibility. Performed after a full exhale, the practice uses a "Mock Inhale" (inhaling without letting air in) to create a powerful vacuum that lifts the diaphragm higher than possible voluntarily. This mechanical lift massages internal organs, releases emotional trauma held in the solar plexus, and restores the ribcage's natural mobility.
The final week combines all elements into a continuous, meditative state known as the Microcosmic Orbit. Using a resonant humming sound (Stough Check) on the exhale to ensure deep relaxation, participants visualize energy circling up the back and down the front of the body. The goal is complete integration and synchronization of the breath and nervous system, achieving deep meditative states and sustained "flow state" clarity.

Western medicine is great. You have an infection, you get the right stuff. Take it and it disappears. Sometimes medicine have side effects we don't like or can't take. Breathwork, and the holistic path, sometimes go to the root of the problem.
As Americans we spend so much time on the go go go. Some of us even spend much of the time in the "flight, fight, or frozen" and do not even know, Breathwork will start to bring awareness to some of the spots we carry all the ugly stuff we don't want.
Breathwork is meant to be easy and most of all relaxing. You will be given suggestions to help you control your breathe which could have a rippling effect on several areas of your life.
This week focuses on preventing "energy leakage" by creating a closed energetic loop. The key practice is maintaining the "Magpie Bridge" (tongue resting on the soft palate) to connect major energy meridians, which simultaneously relaxes the jaw. Couples practice the Stough Exhale (a complete, slow exhale) to optimize oxygen intake while ensuring the tongue seal, building a container for their shared energy.
The focus shifts to Mula Bandha (Root Lock/pelvic floor engagement) to create a stable base, or "cylinder," for the diaphragm. This practice supports the "Diaphragm Piston" mechanic—engaging the pelvic floor at the end of the exhale helps push the diaphragm to its highest arch, expelling stale air and promoting a powerful, reflexive inhale. This practice enhances sexual vitality and grounding.
This week addresses stored emotional tension through Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock). The practice involves drawing the navel in and up on the empty lungs (holding the breath out) to allow the diaphragm to rise fully. This energetic "Diaphragm Ascent" massages the Vagus nerve and releases "fight or flight" energy, requiring flexibility in the ribcage, which is enhanced through partner-assisted stretches.
The final week integrates all prior elements—the Magpie Bridge, the Stough coordination, and the Bandhas. The couple practices the Microcosmic Orbit visualization, where energy circles through their bodies. The ultimate goal is synched breathing where partners inhale and exhale in opposition, creating a "figure-8 of energy" between them, dissolving the sense of two separate nervous systems into a single circuit.
Carl Stough’s breath coordination.
Carl Stough’s theory suggest that somewhere along the line we lost our ability to breathe, either through trauma or tragedy, with the same coordination at our birth. Breathe coordination helps us return to our parasympathetic system.
The benefits are many.
Please make sure to fill this out before beginning. Cannot start without it.
